Be or Do?

At Peace"I am a human being, not a human doing. Don't equate your self-worth with how well you do things in life. You aren't what you do. If you are what you do, then when you don' aren't."

~ Dr. Wayne Dyer

Our society has become very busy. We are always rushing to get more done. There seems to be an expectation of constant achievement and busyness. Most of us feel the pressure at work or from our peers to be a super producer…otherwise we are seen as lazy.

How did this come about? How did we become so busy, so engaged in accomplishing more, in getting more stuff in our lives, that we are unable to breathe at times? We have done it to ourselves, and we have all bought into it…we have taken a drink of the Kool-Aid.

If we ever took the time to stop, step back, and take a look at the big picture…to broaden our perspective, I think most of us would see how ridiculous this lifestyle is. I think we would start to understand that we are here to experience life, not to do more, not to get more stuff. We have gotten ourselves so wrapped up in dong and getting that we don’t even take the time to enjoy the things we do or get.

I believe that we are on this physical plane to be. That’s it. We are here to experience life, and to enjoy the experience. We are here to expand the Universe through our experiences. Perhaps there is a reason that we are called human beings…not human doings.

I, for one, have decided to step back from the fast pace of our lives. I plan to experience life…deliberately experience it. I want to take my time cooking delicious meals, and enjoying the deliciousness of them. I want to slow down and enjoy the fruits of my labors. I want to take the time to feel the happiness that my wonderful life should be filled with. I want to live in the present and take the time to enjoy what is happening…right now…not sometime in the future. I want to take the time to enjoy time spent with family and friends. I want to be…

Don’t get me wrong…I don’t plan to stop doing…but I plan to stop doing so much…I plan to stop trying to keep pace with others. I am quite satisfied with my life. If this slow down means that I have to give up my busy, energy depleting job for a job that is less demanding and leaves me with more left when I am finished for the day, then so be it. The Universe will always supply far more than I need to live on, I’m not worried about that. I just need to simplify and slow down. I need to become one with myself, and I need to forget about trying to please others.

Who’s with me? Do you think I’m crazy, or do you think that you might like to try to slow down as well? Are you ready to stop doing so much and start being? Leave a comment and let the community know what you think. We’re listening.

  1. I am with you on this one. Over the last few years, I’ve made choices that create more time in my life. I am still working on it, but continue to embrace a richer life in this way. It’s not always easy because there is pressure, as you say, to do and accept and buy… But I am learning.

    • Thanks for your comment Carina. I, too, often find it difficult to keep true to this, but I keep trying. I am learning as well. I think that is a good thing.

As always, I appreciate your comments and the insights that you bring.
