Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve. Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle. It's a strengthening of his powers of accomplishment.
~ Thomas Carlyle
What is it that you truly desire in your life? I'm not talking about the little things, the things that you won't even remember that you wanted by the time next week rolls around, but the big picture. What does your ideal life look like?
One of the most important things that you can do for yourself is to get clear on where you want to head. What is (at this point in time) the ultimate, perfect life for you?
I know that this is a question that most of us feel we can answer with ease. After all we think about it all the time...what I would like to have in my life...what would make me happy...we are constantly at it. However, I am not so sure that we really know the answer to this question, at least not clearly. We have a general idea of what we want, it can even hold strong emotions, but how many of us can clearly and specifically identify the life we want? I propose that it is very few of us.
I do feel that it is important to be clear on where we want to go, what we want to do, and the experiences and people that we desire in our lives. I also know that human beings are not static, and thus these desires are in constant flux...they are constantly changing...they are constantly expanding.
I also feel that it is our "duty" to let our desires drive our lives. "Duty" in the sense that if we do not pursue our desires, we are depriving the world, indeed, the Universe, of the expansion that will emanate from the pursuit of those desires. We have our preferences and desires for a reason. They are part of the big picture. They are our way to expand the Universe, exactly as we intended when we came into this life.
I hope this gives you some idea of how important your desires are. We often dismiss what we want as just wishful thinking. We feel, especially when what we desire is far from our current experience, that it is just a pipe dream, or that it is not really what we should be pursuing as "responsible citizens of this world." We dismiss them because we feel that we are being selfish. Nothing can be further from the truth.
Your desires are what lead you, if you allow them, to actions that will move you in the direction of the true purpose of your life. They will lead you down the path where you will be able to look inside yourself and find the joy, the exhilaration, the beauty, and the peace that you are here to experience. Your desires are important, and they deserve all of the attention that you can give to them.
I encourage you to embrace your desires. Let them drive the way you live your life. This is not selfish, but rather, self-full. It is the way that you will experience the fulfillment that each of us deserves. Build your life based on your desires. You’re worth it.
