I Don’t Want…

I have been dealing with people for a long time. I have been counselling people for a long time. One of the main things that I try to get across to people is that they need to look at things from a positive perspective.

I know this is not a new concept. I know that this is not a complicated concept. I know that the concept of a positive outlook and positive thinking is far from rocket surgery...but I have also noticed how many people I have come across that, although they understand the concept, are unable to put it into practice on a consistent basis. Why is that?

What Is a Positive Persepective?

First, let's examine exactly what I mean by "looking at things from a positive perspective." When I say this I mean just that. Look at things from the positive side. Think about the things that you want in your life. Think of the way you want your life to be.

When I suggest this to people they smile and nod. Of course, it is easy, right? So I will ask somebody with something in their life that they don't want...say illness, what they want in their life. They will often answer, "I don't want to be sick anymore." This, my friends, is not looking at things from a positive perspective. This is where many of us fall down. We seem to think that negating a negative is a positive, but it really isn't.

What this person really wants is to be healthy...to have wellness in their life.

When you look at how the Universe operates, it brings to us that which we are attracting through our thoughts and actions. In the case above, the person isn't thinking about wellness, they are still thinking about illness...and that is what the Universe will deliver. A concentration on wellness or health will bring the desired results, but concentrating on "not being ill" will only bring more illness. It is the illness that is at the forefront of the mind.

The same thing would go for somebody in a depression. They might want to be happy, but they think of things from the perspective of not being depressed...and voila, more circumstances and events are delivered to help keep the person in depression. The key here is to think about being happy.

Why Do We Struggle?

So where does this negative thinking come from? Why is it that we don't see our not wanting something as a negative thing?

I think a lot of it comes from the people who have had influence in our lives. This is how we are taught by our parents, teachers, bosses, etc. Where did they learn it? They learned it from their parents, teachers, bosses, etc. So it had to start somewhere...where, I don't know, and it really doesn't matter. What matters is that we change it right here and now.

The media is a big proponent of propagating this kind of thinking. About 95% of what the media reports is negative...this, despite the fact that well over 99% of what happens in our world is positive. Positive is rarely "newsworthy" according to the media, and so they concentrate on what they feel is newsworthy. After all, the media is in it for the profit...they are certainly not in it for the benefits they can pass along to mankind.

I have been told by many media people that bad news sells. While this may be true, it states their motivation right within the statement. They are in the business of selling. "People have the right to know," they will tell anyone who challenges them. I agree. People have the right to know...but they have the right to know everything...not just the bad or negative...and since almost everything is good news, they are really skewing things and manipulating our perspective.

I am not writing this to bash the media. After all, there are many years of tradition in this profession, and reporting the bad news has become so commonplace that they don't know anything better.

So we have developed out negative perspective from the influencers in our lives (including the media). These people did not set out to aid in the development of a negative attitude. They had our best interests in mind, but they learned from their parents, etc., and so they didn't know any better. The negative outlook just keeps propagating.

What Is the Necessary Action?

But you and I have the ability to stops this. We can stop it right now, at least within ourselves. When we bring our negative perspective to a halt, we will find that more and more positive things will enter our lives. We will find ourselves happy, and the Universe will no longer be able to deliver the negative or the things we don't want in our lives. It will be forced to deliver the positive things that are at the forefront of our minds.

As you start this process, you will get resistance, both from within yourself, and from others. With a little practice and some consistency of effort, you will be able to change your own views, nullifying the internal resistance, but what will you do about the others who are fighting against you? Well, the good news is, they will either become quiet on the subject, change their attitudes and outlook to match what you are doing, or they will disappear from your life altogether. You will not be in the right place to have these negative seekers around you, and thus, they will not be around you.

Think about what you do want in your life...forget all about what you don't want. If you can get a handle on this, you will find that you no longer have things in your life that you don't want...and even though what you do want will keep changing and expanding, the Universe will continue to deliver it.
