Interacting with Life

“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all -- the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.”

~ Randy Komisar

What’s happening in your life? Are you living the life you want? Are you on your way to your dream life? Or, are you like many…stuck in a rut with no escape route?

Your life is meant to be engaging. You are meant to have fun. You are meant to accomplish the things you wish to accomplish. You are meant to live life on your terms.

So what is keeping you stuck where you are? There are several things that might put us in a pattern of repeating the same old, same old day after day. The good news is these things are all as temporary as you choose them to be.

First off, there is habit. Habits are just things that we do over and over until we are so used to them that they seem normal…they might even seem like they are the only approach to things. We get into habits over time as we establish a routine for our lives. When something is routine, it feels comfortable, and why change it if it is comfortable? Well, if you don’t change your habits and your routines, you will remain exactly where you are.

Habits can be changed with persistent effort. Just decide that you will do things differently, and then make sure that you do. Day after day, you may need to remind yourself that you plan to change as you find yourself slipping back into the familiar and comfortable. One word of caution when changing a habit…you can either remove a habit or you can replace it. If you decide to replace it, be aware that what you replace it with will soon become a habit…so make sure that it is something that you want as a habit.

Secondly, there is fear. We often don’t pursue our dreams and desires, the life we want to live, because we have fear. The fear can be of many sorts. It might be fear of failure. It might be fear of the unknown; it might even be a fear of success. Whatever the fear, the only way to conquer it is to face it. Peel it down to the underlying reasons. Why are you afraid? When you pare down a fear, you will find that there is really nothing at the center of it. The fear is unfounded. You have developed your fears over time…either through experience or through the warnings of those who you trust and respect. Either way, there is really nothing to fear.

Facing a fear does not necessarily mean that you become unafraid…it merely means that you feel the fear of doing something, but you do it anyway. Perhaps, when the thing or outcome feared does not materialize, the fear may lessen or disappear. As you face fear after fear without dire consequences, you will find that you can face your fears much more easily.

Thirdly, there is our beliefs. When there is something we want in our life…something we want to acquire, something we want to accomplish, or something we want to do, we often believe that it is not possible for us. This “impossibility” can also take many forms…it might be that you are too old, or too young. You may be too big or too small. You may not have the education or skills that you need. When you think these things, I would like you to take a step back, and accept your reason for exactly what it is…and excuse.

That’s right. We are masters of coming up with excuses. Our minds are great at developing beliefs that we can use as excuses, and because they are beliefs, they are true for us. When you find yourself thinking that something…anything…is impossible, take a step back and really think about it. It is only impossible because you believe it to be. You can change our beliefs with some work. A belief is just a thought that we keep thinking, AND…we can choose our thoughts. Start thinking a new thought about your dream or goal. Start thinking that it is possible for you. Truly, nothing is impossible, so just change those beliefs and go after what you want.

As you get out of your rut, you will notice that you are interacting with life. You will find yourself enjoying the journey. You will find yourself happy. You will find yourself excitedly looking forward to the next part of your life’s adventure.

Interact with life. Find the best it has to offer you. Enjoy it to the fullest. Find the things that will fulfill you and go after them. Life will keep coming, and it will keep providing you with more to be, do, or have. You are truly unlimited…start acting like you are.

Are you in a rut? Do you find yourself merely existing, rather than living life to the fullest? Are you willing to change your habits, face your fears, and change your beliefs? Leave us a comment and let the community know what you are going to do about it. We’re listening.
