“Vision is not enough; it must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs.”
~ Václav Havel
I have heard it said that a goal is a dream with a deadline. While this makes sense to me, it also got me thinking along the lines of dreams, desires, and wishes.
If you are alive today, then I am confident that I can say, about you, that you have dreams, desires, and wishes for things to be different. Granted, it depends upon your situation, your age, and your circumstances as to how different your dreams and desires are from your current reality, but I submit that if everything was exactly as you want it, and you did not desire anything further, then you are finished with this life and it is time to move on.
So, we all want things to be different. Now we come to the point…Is that want, that desire, a wish, or is it an intent. There is a significant distinction between these two. A wish, as I interpret the word, means that there is a desire for something different, but we either have no intention on changing things to match that wish, or we feel powerless to affect any change. In either case, it is something we desire, but we plan on taking no action.
An intent, on the other hand, is a desire that we plan to see happen…whether through our own action or through the actions of a group that we support, we intend to see the desire come to fruition. We will put in effort to affect the change we desire to see.
I believe intentions are very powerful. I believe that when we set something as an intention, we have not just set a goal, but we have set the certainty of attaining that goal in our mind. We do not just plan to pursue it as a possibility, but we plan to make it a reality – no matter what it takes.
Intentions are the things that guide our lives. They are the desires that drive us. They are the threads from which we weave the fabric of our lives. Intentions are those things that begin to move the world in the direction that we desire.
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it!”
~ William Hutchison Murray
There are things in our lives that we would like to have – we will call them wishes, and there are the things is life that we intend to have – these are our intentions. It is important, as we travel our journey in this life, to recognize the difference, and to put our concentration on our intentions. Let the wishes go…let somebody else turn them into their intentions.
Are you ready to let go of your wishes and concentrate on your intentions? Do you have wishes that you want to turn into intentions? Is it a matter of commitment, or is it merely a matter of degree? Leave us a comment and let us know what you feel about this subject. We’re listening.
