Perception or Reality (or both)?

Perception"Let us live for the beauty of our own reality."

~ Charles Lamb

Have you ever stopped to think about your life? Have you ever wondered why it is exactly like it is? Is it fate that has brought you to where you are? Is it your choices? Or is it some grand design?

Each of us will have a different opinion on this, but today I am going to tell you what I think.

Everything in our lives is merely our perception of the way things are. We look at our lives and the circumstances that form them, and we think we are experiencing reality…but are we? Of course we are. What is happening in your life is real…to you!

You see, it really doesn’t matter what is happening, it is our perception of what is around us that forms our reality. Our perceptions support the beliefs that we hold about the world…that is all there is to it. We perceive what is happening from the vantage point of our beliefs, and what we experience is real. But if somebody else was in exactly the same situation, they would perceive things differently…they would see things from the vantage point of their beliefs…and their “reality” would differ from yours.

Each of us is unique. Each of us has slightly different beliefs (or radically different), but each of us has our own way of seeing things, and thus our realities are different. Of course, in a world like ours, where we have very similar beliefs…developed through our upbringing and the influence of others…we have a very similar perception of our world, and thus, very similar realities. Often they are so similar that we can’t see the difference, and so we begin to think that reality is a cold, hard fact.

But what of the “crazy” people out there? What of those who see the world completely differently than the “rest of us?” Well, their perception differs radically, and thus, their reality is different, but that does not make their reality any less valid than yours. Each of us sees what we believe we will see. It is all perception, and so, there is no one reality, and those who see things differently are not “crazy.” They are just experiencing the world differently than you do…as with all of us…each reality is different.

I encourage you to accept that reality is merely perception, and that no one perception is more “right” than any other…and so, be accepting of those who don’t see things the same as you. You are, after all, from their perspective, one of the “crazy ones.”

Do you believe that reality is a cold hard fact, or can you accept that it is just perception? Leave us a comment to let us know what you think. We’re listening.
